Bed bugs are a growing problem throughout the country. Many people associate infestation with lack of proper hygiene and poor housekeeping. The truth is that these pests can be found almost anywhere and latch onto various items to be carried home. They feed on blood, not caring about the cleanliness of the skin they must pierce to reach it. The hide in cracks and crannies that are all but impossible to clean or reach. This leaves many who never dreamed they could be infested wondering how to get rid of bed bugs.

One of the first things that people think of when it comes to getting rid of bed bugs is contacting a pest control company. Exterminators come to the home and spray chemicals that are known to kill these pests into the cracks and dark places they like to hide. This can be important because each female is capable of producing up to 500 offspring in a lifetime that lasts only a few days.

For those who can not afford to pay an exterminator or who prefer not to use chemicals when getting rid of bed bugs, there are other options that can be tried on their own. One can rent a steam pump capable of producing steam under great pressure at many local markets. These can be used to shoot the steam into the cracks where insects are hiding. The temperature of the steam is high enough to kill them on contact.

Rubbing alcohol can kill out the eggs when they are visible. It should be applied with a stiff brush. This will disrupt the air around the eggs and they will starve for oxygen, dying in just a few minutes.

Infested furniture and bedding should be cleaned immediately. A vacuum cleaner may be used on the beds and other furnishings to remove live bugs and dead carcasses. It is then a good idea to cover the furniture with plastic to suffocate any remaining pests that are not removed.

Bedding and other clothing that is suspected of being infested should be washed in hot water. Cold or warm water will not kill the insects. When possible, one should tumble dry these materials on high heat to reach any that survive the washing process. The hotter the dryer, the more thoroughly it will clear the materials of pests.

Another idea is to place exposed furniture in direct sunlight. These insects prefer the dark and only sneak out at night. This is because bright light will kill them. One may also purchase traps in stores that the pests crawl into and become stuck.

When it comes to learning how to get rid of bed bugs, one has several options. Some factors that determine which is best include whether one wants instant results, whether the use of chemicals is a major concern, and the budget one has available for eradication. The best bet is to hire a professional pest control agency. However, there are more natural options that make use of materials available in the home and/or items that can be obtained easily that will be effective, if somewhat slower to eliminate the problem.

Adult bed bugs are usually reddish/brown in color and have a flattened appearance. They look a lot like an apple seed in size and appearance. The newly hatched ones look like adults, except they do not have any color to them. As they mature, they will start to get their reddish/brown color. An adult can lay up to five eggs each day. It is nearly impossible for the human eye to see them as they resemble dust. Despite it all, you should not have to live or sleep in the same home with these bugs. While you may not fill the bite, after they bite you, in many cases, it will itch and you will develop red bites on your skin. There are children out there that have become anaemic because of these bugs. In the paragraphs below, we are going to give you more bed bugs information so that you will be able to eventually get rid of bed bugs.

It is important that you do your best to keep these critters out of your house. Develop good hygiene habits and good sanitation to prevent them from thriving. From time to time, search your entire home and inspect it for any signs of these pests. Searching the home frequently will help prevent an infestation.

When you sleep in motels or hotels, make sure you take a high quality bed bug spray with you to spray on your bed. There are various products you can use in order to prevent infestation. Make sure you do your research in order to find the best one.

These pests are usually less than an inch in length and as adults, they can fill up on human blood in less than fifteen minutes. After these pests have feasted on blood, they don’t really look like themselves. In fact, when they are engorged with blood, many people think they are a different insect.

When the eggs are laid by the adult, it will take up to ten days for them to hatch. Once they have hatched, they will need to have at least five large blood feeding before they grow into adult size.

They are going to shed their exoskeleton between the feedings. Once they have matured, they will start laying eggs. As you see, if you are not careful, you could easily become infested with these pests.

Bed bugs like hiding in cracks, walls, behind the wallpaper, behind picture frames, under base boars, in the mattress and even in electrical outlets. They have a bad odor that is caused by an oily liquid that they give off. Often times, they are carried into the house by luggage, clothes, bedding and furniture.

In conclusion, these are small pests that love to suck the blood out of humans and warm blooded animals. They hide in mattresses, but can also live in other places in your home. They do not transmit diseases, but the bites can become swollen and itch. They are an insect that creeps around during the night when humans are sleeping. There are many products one can use in order to get rid of an infestation, but it is important to practice good hygiene in order to prevent an infestation.

Pests and insects can be a nuisance when they attack your home and some of them can also transmit diseases. Bed bugs are one among the many pests that infest the human living environment since they feed on blood. These insects are easy to pick up either sitting on infested furniture or while traveling. Many people unknowingly carry them in their suitcases while traveling for they are prevalent in hotel rooms that are poorly maintained. This article discusses bed bugs detection, prevention and bed bugs removal.

These insects are brown in color but change to reddish brown when they are fully fed on blood. Their nocturnal way of life makes them hard to spot for they are only active when people are sleeping. Adult bugs have flat, wingless oval body closed to the size of an apple seed. They feed on human blood and can survive for many days of no feeding making them rather difficult to eradicate by starving.

Detecting bed bugs is rather difficult considering their nocturnal lifestyle and their size. These insects hide in cracks, crevices, bed joints, mattress seems and furniture. Their detection is mostly through the realization of their bites on the skin, presence of tiny blood stains on bed coverings, presence of tiny red skeleton shells, presence of dead small insects on bed coverings and they may also be spotted moving around.

Although there is no established link of their bites with the transmission of any disease, the trauma associated with their bites can cause sleepless nights. Different people also react differently to their bites and they can cause the swelling of the skin in certain individual which in turn could cause an infection.

The best way of treating the effects of these insects is through getting rid of them. Bed bugs Prevention is very simple and can be done easily by the homeowner. This can be done through periodic inspections of crevices, wall cracks, and furniture or bed joints. Cracks and crevices on the walls are to be effectively sealed to deny them breeding places.

Hotel rooms that are poorly maintained are among the best nests for them. While traveling it is important to ensure you do not place your bags on the floor and while returning home make sure you check the suitcase seams and compartments carefully. Do not bring home any furniture from the streets for they may be infested by the same.

After a positive identification of these insects, it is necessary to seek the services of qualified pest control professionals. Most of the pesticides available over the counter hardly kill the insects even they have labels indicating they are for bed bugs. Application of insecticides should be coupled with cleaning the rooms, filling cracks and crevices for effective eradication of the insects.

Bed bugs hardly cause any diseases but they are a nuisance in the home environment. It is the duty of home owners and the landlords to provide an environment free from these insects for their families and tenants respectively. Prevention and control of these pests is the best way of getting rid of bed bugs and their effects.

There are many ways that you can get rid of bed bugs, but with their population steadily increasing, major infestations cannot be treated by anyone but a professional company. See when you use chemicals and sprays to kill bed bugs, they will work, but only up to a certain extent. Even when the professionals come in to spray heavily infested homes, they usually will have to return 2-3 more times until they are gone completely.

Chemical treatments to get rid of bed bugs are not cheap, not only that, they are not guaranteed safe for kids and pets, let alone the fully grown adult. The thing is that in the last ten years, the bed bugs are making a comeback stronger than ever. If you have done any research, you would have seen that they were eradicated back in the 50′s and 60′s by pesticides, but now they are stronger, and also immune to the pesticides that were used back then, and they are also growing immune to some of the newer bed bug sprays that are out there.

There is another solution though, and that is by killing bed bugs with extreme heat. Most pest control companies would recommend a temperature of over 130 degrees to ensure that they are dead, as well as all of their eggs. This method of getting rid of those blood suckers is called Thermal Remediation. This is a very effective process, where a home will be heated up to temperatures around 130 degrees or more for a period of 2 hours or more, and almost guarantees to get rid of 100% of the bed bugs inside of the house.

What happens is that these heaters are brought into each room of the home, and they also have blower fans to dispense the heat around the home, into the couches and beds, the clothes, just about every thing, turning the home into a sauna. This is a very effective process, and before it can be done, the only thing that has to be removed from the home are things that can melt, such as plastics.

After only a couple of minutes of the bed bugs being in contact with this extreme heat, their bodies will dry out and they will quickly die. Their eggs will also dry up, and they will not stand a chance to live. The only bad thing about this process is that it isn’t cheap. Though it is just as expensive as getting a professional chemical treatment, which isn’t nearly as effective as the extreme heat method.

You will be looking to spend around $2000-$6000 for the Thermal Remediation process to get rid of bed bugs, but this works no matter how bad your home is infested, and there is a good chance that there will be no survivors when done, you just have to be sure not to let them back in once they are gone for good.

As bed bugs are a growing problem, the EPA has stepped in, and has presented roughly $550,000 in grants, to five different states, to research the prevention and removal of bed bugs. This is great news, as they are growing more immune to natural pesticides that are being used. As of now, one of the only ways to definitely kill bed bugs is through extreme heat, although some pesticides will work for bed bugs removal, a lot of the times it will take multiple treatments to completely get rid of them.

The grants will be given over the next to years, the states that will be receiving the money for the bed bug research are Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, Michigan and Missouri.

The reason for the grants as these are some of the worst locations in the United States where they are having some of the worst bed bug problems ever. The grants will be going towards not only research, but training for workers on how to spot and get rid of bed bugs. As I have stated before, the more that you know about your enemy, the better chances to have to get rid of them. There are many methods that work well, and there are many methods that do not work at all, even though if you search on the internet some articles will say otherwise. This goes to show that you cannot believe everything that you read on the internet.

This is especially true when it comes to these bed bug websites that are just trying to get you to buy a product, and they will write anything that sounds good, thinking that they are actually giving you tips on getting rid of bed bugs, just because they had read a poorly written article somewhere, they may think that they are know experts on bed bug extermination.

If you would like more information about this bed bug EPA grant, you can visit the main source here. With Michigan and Maryland getting the most of the money, you can see how much each University is getting for the education and research on bed bugs right here.

Are you a victim of insect bites, and not really sure of where they came from? If you go to sleep one night and wake up with insect bites all over your body the next morning, than there is a good chance that you were dinner for some bed bugs while you were sleeping. This can freak out people pretty bad, and the damage that is done is more mental than physical.

Just the though of having little bugs crawling on you while you are sleeping, and poking you while sucking your blood, can be pretty disturbing, and cause many people to be scared to even go to sleep in their own home.

The good news is that bed bugs do not carry any known diseases, and also, when they are biting you, or feeding on you, the bites at the time being are virtually painless. But that does not mean that the bed bug bites don’t have to be treated.

If you find that you do have bed bug bites, the worst thing that you can do is to scratch them, which can be very tempting as the bites will cause extreme itchiness to the skin.

The first thing that you should do is to wash the bites with hot soapy water. Get them clean, and try your hardest to avoid scratching them, as this can start an infection, and also increase the swelling. You can use an anti-itch cream such as Cortizone, which is designed to relieve itchiness to the skin, and also treat insect bites from mosqitoes, and also bed bugs too.

There are many herbs that are out there also that have been said to treat bed bug bites. Some will work better than others, but it also takes into consideration the sensitivity of the persons skin, as well as the severity of the bed bug bites themselves. Natural herbs such as rib wort and pigs ear is said to do wonders in treating these types of insect bites, and can be found naturally or bought at herbal stores, either locally in town or ordered online, but if you have insect bites it is best to treat them immediately, and not have to wait days or even weeks to get them delivered to you.

As I have mentioned there are many types of herbs and remedies that are out there that will help treat bed bug bites, if you have any good ideas, or suggestions that have worked for you to treat bed bug bites, then please feel free to leave a comment below and share with us your experience.

Anytime you are moving into a place where someone else previously lived, you are taking a risk of moving into a unit that has bed bugs. Not saying this to scare anyone that is looking to get an apartment, I am just saying there are a lot of cases where residents move into a nice looking empty apartment that’s infested with bed bugs.

First off this is not something that is extremely common, but it is something that happens. And you being a tenant, a newly one at that, you should not be moving into a place that has blood sucking insects hiding in the corners of the popcorn ceiling, or under the carpet tacks, waiting for their next meal to move in and set up.

As I have said many times bed bugs do not care if your home is clean, dirty, smoke free or smoking home, all they care about is getting their next meal and laying their eggs to reproduce, that is it, that is all they care about.

But if you are a tenant at an apartment and you do discover that you are waking up with insect bites, and even happen to spot a bed bug or two, then you need to notify management and have them take care of the problem as soon as possible, by getting a professional bed bug exterminator in there as soon as possible.

The professional should do a thorough spraying of the entire building, as if just one unit is sprayed, the bed bug can easily travel through the walls to the next apartment over, and escape the bed bug spray and survive, so that really wouldn’t be curing the problem, just spreading it to the next door neighbors.

Depending on how bad the infestation is, they may have to move your apartment. If this is the case, make sure to get mattress covers for your mattress, pillows and box spring. There is a good chance that while you are moving to your other unit, you may find out that you have a few stragglers that are tagging along inside of your mattress.

Also remember that they can hide in your nite stands and other furniture.

You hear about them all over the news, all the time, on Cnn and more from time to time about bed bug infestations. This can bring a little bit of a panic to the public as no one out there wants bed bugs inside of their home. But this leads to the question I hear asked all of the time, how do you get bed bugs, and also, how can I prevent from getting bed bugs?

Well you are in the right spot if you are looking for where bed bugs come from, and also what you can do to prevent them from entering your home in the first place. First off you have to realize that bed bugs are very good travelers, and they can also live up to a year without feeding, so they have no problem hanging out in your luggage for a couple days, weeks or months, until they are let loose, and this is usually how bedbugs end up in your home in the first place.

They can be found in hotels, cruise ships, colleges, just about any place that you can think about. And all you need is a couple of those home invaders to arrive in your home, hide inside of your mattress, and breed more like there is no tomorrow. Pretty scary if you think about it. But there are some good measures and tips that you can apply so that you may prevent them from breeding, laying more eggs, and turning your home into a bed bug infested mess.

I have already spoken about ways that you can be cautious when you are traveling in hotels, making sure that you inspect the bedding upon arrival for spotting the little blood suckers, and also the ways that you can kill bed bugs, which the easiest way in my opinion would be extreme heat. So if you get back home from traveling, and are paranoid about them hiding in your clothes, throw them in the washer machine and wash with hot water. This should be able to kill them if you have your water heater temperature above 120 degrees f.

Another good prevention tip, would be to seal the mattress, pillows and box spring. By doing this you are taking away their number one hiding spot where they love to camp out. There are many types of mattress covers that are out there that are made specifically for bed bugs and dust mites. Another good thing is if you have bedbugs living inside of your mattress already, the zipped covers will prevent them from getting out and biting you while you are sleeping. But as mentioned earlier, don’t plan on starving them to death as they can go a very long time without feeding, and you will have to wash the mattress zip cover sooner or later.

The bottom line is that bed bugs to not arrive in your home from having a dirty place, or having dirty laundry and empty soda bottles laying around everywhere, the only thing that does is attract roaches and gives the blood suckers more places to hide. Being aware of where they can be, especially when traveling, is the number one prevention for bed bugs in my opinion.

In order for you to get rid of bed bugs, you should first learn a little bit about them. You could think that you have bed bugs, but if you do not know how to properly identify them, you could wind up spending loads of money on bed bug sprays or professional treatment, when they were just small cockroaches you could have gotten rid of with a $10 fogger from Home Depot.

So let’s get down to business, here are some bed bug facts that will help you identify, find, and allow you to get rid of bed bugs.

Adult bed bugs can grow up to 1/4 of an inch, they are oval shaped, and they have a shell that is colored a reddish brown, if the bed bug just got done feeding, it is going to be more red as the blood is fresh, and their skin in clear so you will be able to tell they have just fed.

If you have ever seen a bed bug in motion, you know that they are mobile, they can about as fast as an ant, but one good thing you have on your side is that they do not jump, and thank goodness they do not fly either. Let me repeat that, bed bugs can not fly or jump.

Early detection of bed bugs is extremely important, don’t just brush it off if you discover bed bugs are in your home, as a female bed bug can lay up to 5 eggs a week, or in other words about 500 eggs in their life time, talk about a spreading infestation.

But just how quickly can a bed bug infestation spread? Well once the eggs are layed, it only takes them about 2 weeks to hatch. The eggs are about 1/16th of an inch, and they can be seen with the naked eye, if you have good eyesight, but it would be wise to use a magnifying glass to confirm that it is a bed bug egg.

Once the egg is hatched, the baby bed bug is referred to as a nymph. Nymphs only need to feed about 5 times until they are considered to be an adult. This can happen in as little time as just a month. Now you see why finding out for sure if you have bed bugs is important, and why you need to take action to get rid of bed bugs as fast as possible if you find that your home has an infestation.

If you do find out that you have bed bugs in one of you vacation homes, don’t think that you can starve them easily. Sure, they only feed on blood, that’s it, but adult bed bugs can go up to a year without a meal, though I am not sure how long the newly hatched nymphs can go.

Bed bugs just don’t feed on humans, they feed on just about anything with warm blood, such as bats, dogs, cats, birds, if it has warm blood, the bed bug is more than likely able to feed on it.

Bed bugs are not yet known to transmit any kind of diseases, but they can leave bumps on your skin depending on the person, and just so you should know, that if you are chronically itching insect bites, they can get infected, so proper care should be taken to relieve the itchiness of bed bug bites.

First defense against bed bugs is educating yourself about them, you are in the right place if you are looking for some education on bed bugs, and particularly in this post, the most common bed bug hiding places. The most common out of all of these places, is that bed bugs love to hide in your mattress, under your mattress, in the box springs, between the crack of your mattress, headboards, basically anywhere on your bed that is dark.

See bed bugs rarely come out during the day, and during the day they usually hide in dark spots, as they are professionals at hiding. Bed bugs are really not that hard to kill, the hardest part is actually finding the bed bugs. But inside and around your mattress isn’t the only place that bed bugs can hide, if it were, it would be really easy to get rid of them, as all you would have to do is throw away your mattress, sheets, bed frame and headboard, but this doesn’t always solve the problem.

They also love to hide under your night stands, behind wall outlets, in the carpet, in your lamps, alarm clocks, remember anywhere that is dark and seems like a good hiding spot for an insect that is only 1/4 of an inch long or shorter, they could be hiding there.

Speaking of that, if you are one of those people that likes to keep stacks of junk under their beds, such as shoe boxes, clothes, shoes, whatever, you are just giving the bed bugs more places to hide, and therefore are harder to kill. As most pesticides that are available these days require you to make as close to direct contact with the bed bugs as possible.

One more spot that love to hide, you know those popcorn ceilings? Yea, I myself have found many nymphs up there and bed bugs when I had my room infested, and this was one of the ways I was able to pin point where they were all hiding, well most of them anyway.

Where ever it is that they may be hiding, you have to realize that it is more than likely going to be within 20 feet of where you are sleeping. They are not the fastest insects, they don’t fly, but they can jump and they are very good at climbing. So if you are waking up in the morning and discover bed bug bites on you, at least now you have some means of trying to find them, and also have more knowledge of some of the bed bugs favorite hiding places.
